Public Works-AEC Appropriations bill (H.R. 8947). The vote is on the Roncalio amendment to delete from the bill $3.8 million from the AEC budget funds to set off nuclear explosions to release natural gas. Conservationists opposed the AEC project because of the risks of radioactive leakage, contamination to the natural gas and underground water supplies, and permanent loss of other resources commingled with the shale deposits trapping the gas. The Nixon Administration opposed the amendment. June 25, 1973. Rejected 108-303. Yes is the correct vote.
