1975 Scorecard Vote

Lock and Dam 26
House Roll Call Vote 178
Issue: Water

Supplemental Appropriations FY 1975 (H.R. 5899). The vote is on the Mahon amendment to authorize funding for Lock and Dam 26 without public hearings. The amendment would circumvent a court injunction to allow the Army Corps of Engineers to deepen the Mississippi River channel from 9 feet to 12 feet. The existing 9 foot channel has already done severe damage to fish and wildlife habitat, causing the State of Wisconsin to file suit against the Army Corps of Engineers. Many conservation groups have opposed the channel as a waste to the taxpayer when nearby existing railroads could absorb the increased traffic with less cost. Rejected 168-179. May 22, 1975. ÒNOÓ is the correct vote.
