New River
House Roll Call Vote 1090
Issues: Lands/Forests, Water

Amendments to the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act of 1968 (HR 13372). The vote is on passage of a bill to designate 26.5 miles of the New River in North Carolina as part of the Wild & Scenic Rivers System. This action preserves a beautiful river, archaeological and historical values, the existing farmlands, and fine fishing and canoeing. It also invalidated the Federal Power Commission's license to construct the Blue Ridge Dam hydroelectric power project. Although the project would create 1,500 temporary construction jobs, it would also banish 3,000 people from their ancestral homes. The Dam was fought bitterly by local residents, farmers, fishermen, and conservationists. August 10, 1976. Passed 311-73. "YES" is the correct vote.
