National Energy Policy I
House Roll Call Vote 461
Issues: Lands/Forests, Transportation

(H.R. 8444) Ad Hoc Energy Committee. Vote is on the Tsongas amendment to set up a one year Department of Transportation study on the energy conservation potential of measures to reduce the use of off-road recreational vehicles, including motor boats and airplanes. Originally the Committee recommended a special tax on gas for recreational vehicles, but this was rejected. The study could build a case for imposing such measures in the future. Conservationists would welcome restrictions on many kinds of off-road vehicles, which not only consume energy but are destructive to soil and wildlife values on the public lands. Adopted 212-210. August 2, 1977. YES is the correct vote.
