Alaskan Land Use
House Roll Call Vote 208
Issues: Lands/Forests, Wildlife

Alaskan Natives Land Claims bill (HR 10367). Vote on the Udall-Saylor amendment, authorizing the Secretary of Interior to set aside 100 million acres for possible parks and wildlife refuges, and creating a federal-state planning commission to draw up a land use plan for the State of Alaska. The amendment had only a minor impact upon the natives, who could select almost half their lands before the Interior Department acted. But because of a previous agreement with the House Interior Committee, the Alaska Federation of Natives opposed all amendments to the bill. The Nixon Administration also opposed the Udall-Saylor amendment. (Rejected 178-217. Oct. 20, 1971. "Yes" is the correct vote.)
